Supported Internships

Programme Aims
Our Supported Internships aim to bridge the gap between education and employment for young people with additional learning needs. We focus on developing the whole learner, building confidence, strengthening essential workplace behaviours, and supporting personal independence. Through personalised guidance and meaningful real‑world experience, we empower learners to overcome barriers, grow in capability, and progress into sustained paid employment.
Who Is It For
This programme is designed for young people aged 16-24 with additional learning needs who would benefit from a supportive, practical pathway into the world of work. It is ideal for learners who are ready to develop their independence, enhance their communication skills, and gain hands‑on experience in real employment settings. Specialist job coaches provide tailored support, ensuring every learner feels encouraged, understood, and ready to take their next steps.
Programme Structure
Learners follow a flexible hybrid model, spending two days at RC Education Academy and three days in a workplace placement.
During centre‑based days, learners build essential skills through personalised sessions that may include:
-
Travel training - developing safe, confident use of public transport and independent travel routines
-
Financial education - budgeting, understanding payslips, managing money, and planning for adult life
-
Independent living skills - personal organisation, time management, communication, and everyday decision‑making
-
Workplace behaviours and employability skills - communication, teamwork, problem‑solving, and professional conduct
Once learners feel confident and prepared, they move into meaningful work placements across a range of sectors. Specialist job coaches support them throughout, offering guidance, encouragement, and on‑the‑job coaching to ensure each learner progresses at their own pace.
What’s Next
As learners advance through their placement and develop independence, we begin preparing them for the transition into adulthood and employment. This includes CV building, interview practice, job applications, and exploring suitable roles or apprenticeships.
Our whole‑learner approach continues throughout this stage, reinforcing travel confidence, strengthening financial understanding, and supporting
independent decision‑making. We also work closely with families and employers to ensure every young person leaves RC Education Academy with a clear direction, the skills to succeed, and the confidence to move into sustained paid employment and a fulfilling future.
*Please note that although we will try our best, Supported Internship placement allocations cannot always be guaranteed with specific partners, as all placements are assigned according to availability and learner needs at the time.*
